Taking no bullshit
Employees often use phrases to avoid responsibility. Recognize them and their true meaning. “If”: passing responsibility to circumstances or to others, covering his butt. “Yes, but”: making excuse in advance, knowing it is unlikely he will do it. “I will try”: avoiding, but attempting to remain positive, and hoping to survive. “Anyhow”: belittling the problem, refusing cooperation. “I will take care of it”: gaining time and covering up for he will never get back to you. You set the deadline and follow up. “Maybe / I don’t know”: postponing or inability to decide. Ask him when and how he will learn for sure. “Shall see”: refusing but camouflaging in uncertainty. “I suppose”: being defensive. Ask for specifics.
