Inspiring leader
Be an inspiring leader. Give feedback to your reports regularly and in face to face. Have an agenda for the discussion, and keep record. Clarify what you need to do for her/him to perform. Ensure work conditions are provided and supportive. Don't let others (ab)use the time and talent of your people. Encourage or push, whichever is the right way. Know how far you can go in mobilizing each of your people in case of an unusual situation or emergency. Never ventilate your problems on your subordinates, but feel free asking for help. Reward results instead of effort.
