Confronting alcohol problem
Acknowledge that zero tolerance policy is a corporate daydream in many cases. Understand that drinking and alcoholism are not the same thing. Accept moderate drinking in a work environment where no harm can be done. Encourage absentism, but also respect a culture if a glass of wine or beer is part of the lunch. Consider company parties and social events alike as work, serve (drink) accordingly. Don't tolerate the "beer pressure" that is influencing others, mainly newcomers, to join drinking. Offer alcohol-free opportunities for team bonding. Never let anybody operating machinery or driving under the influence of alcohol.
