Firing someone
Start by establishing that you have bad news. Do not offer apologies or make excuses. Get right to the point, don’t make small talk around it. Keep the focus on the fact that it’s the role that has been deemed no longer necessary or the employee’s poor performance or disciplinary infractions (as the case may be), not the person. Try to deliver the notice in a human way. Express confidence that the employee will succeed in future career pursuits. Advise co-workers of the employee’s termination as soon as possible after the employee has left the building. Vent your emotions, feelings and thoughts thereafter.
