Everyone wants something from everyone else at work. Assume that no relationship and communication is for its own sake. Acknowledge the wide range of interests from getting an ear for venting to boosting salary or promotion. Make a list of the valuables you can offer to others. Add all the critical resources you control, be it money (budget), people (direct reports and allies), information (personal network), expertise (in any field, not only work-related). Estimate the current value of each items in terms of potential favor you expect in return. Work on making your list longer and stronger. Sell your goods.
