Defusing aggression
Avoid any physical contact unless absolutely necessary as this may cause provocation. Develop open line of communication to make the other person feel heard and respected. Remain relatively calm and slow, maintain an assertive tone of voice. Remember that you shouldn’t react to any insults from the other party, unless he is frustrated towards you (i.e. not at an issue). Avoid defensive body language, which could be interpreted as hostile. Show the other person that you’re listening and understanding what he is saying. Offer solutions, allow the aggressor to choose between options that are within your interest. Protect yourself by creating a physical barrier between yourself and the aggressor, getting support from a colleague or leaving the situation entirely. Prepare yourself if likely to encounter aggressive behavior.
