Responding to controversial work order
Start with indirect influencing techniques that are sophisticated and subtle. Reframe the work order in a way that alters the meaning of it. Use paradoxical communication, which is putting the boss in a double bind. Cite policies and procedures. Play a bit dumb, apply the Colombo approach (no need to refer to your wife). Use humor to initiate change. Be direct if none of the above works. Make your message short, be brief and specific. Use "I" statements that include "want", "prefer", "would like". Say "no", if all else failed, and be prepared to find another job in case.
