Considering options
Don’t get manipulated by fixed or limited choices. Spot the game being played. Get your emotions in check. Take your time, don’t go immediately for the lesser of two evils. Put clarifying questions, ask for the full facts being made available. Involve your manager in a dialogue, increase the number of options up for consideration. Think over carefully all your options, even the ones with probably unfavorable outcome. For each of your choices, consider only what you don’t want but are afraid you might get. Pick the alternative that looks best when viewed in this light.
